HALIFAX neurosur-geon Dr. Ivar Mendez is renowned for operations in which he implants tiny devices deep in the brains of people with debilitating conditions, often ending symptoms that have plagued them for years.

Outside the operating room, the Bolivian-born doctor has been taking a similar approach in his efforts to narrow the wealth and health gap between his home country and Canada.

He’s making small, strategic steps that should have big impacts on individuals and whole communities in a South American country where 60 per cent of nine million people live below the poverty line and basic health care is inaccessible to many.
